Kids can apply for Kangaroo math competitions through schools or individually. Also, the Math Kangaroo registration is open for both in-person and virtual applications. Most of the time, registrations open in the middle of September.

Unlike other math competitions, the Math Kangaroo competition puts a special emphasis on three-dimensional geometry. In addition to that, the Math Kangaroo test includes a lower proportion of discrete mathematic problems when compared to other mathematical competitions.

While students in grades 1-4 can get up to 96 points, students in grades 5-12 can earn up to 120 points in the Math Kangaroo competition. The expected score for the mathematical Kangaroo exam is 36.8 points with a standard deviation of 9.4 points. That is a great score for students who apply for the competition.

Obviously, it is not easy for students to get the expected score as the level of competition is really high. Thus, students need to learn foundational concepts and practice to improve their speed, math, and problem-solving skills.

As mentioned before, the annual Kangaroo math competition takes place on the 3rd Thursday of March every year. In 2023, the competition will be held on March 16th all around the world.

Math Kangaroo is an international mathematical competition for students in grades 1 through 12. The competition consists of a single round that is taken on the same date (third Thursday of March) at a registered center. Awards are given to the top scoring students per grade at the national level. High scoring students in the US that are ranked high within their state will also be awarded as a state winner.

A variety of problems are used in levels 7 through 12. The majority of the problems are algebra or geometry. Math Kangaroo puts a special emphasis on three-dimensional geometry, which are usually not seen on many other competitions. Problems in discrete mathematics (number theory and counting and probability) are occasionally used, but in a lower proportion when compared to other mathematical competitions. A few logic and physics questions may also appear. None of the problems require the use of precalculus concepts (logs, summations, complex numbers) or trigonometry. Similarly, there are no calculus problems.

Trig-Star is an annual, national competition for high school students who excel at trigonometry. The purpose of the Trig-Star competition is to recognize students who excel at trigonometry, to introduce students to practical applications of mathematics in professional environments, and to grow awareness of surveying as a profession among mathematically-skilled high school students.

The M3 Challenge is a contest that gives high schoolers the chance to experience working as a team to tackle a practical problem under time and resource constraints. The challenge is meant to give high schoolers a sense of the kinds of problems faced by professional mathematicians working in the real world. Students who are gifted at coding might consider this competition since extra credit awards are available for teams who incorporate outstanding code as part of their solution.

Math Prize for Girls is an annual competition held at MIT. The competition consists of 20 challenging problems that test mathematical creativity and insight, and all 20 questions must be answered in two and a half hours. Only high-school level mathematics will be covered in the questions, but there are no questions pertaining to calculus in the contest!

MathCON is a nonprofit national mathematics organization recognized for its annual student math competition for students in grades 4-12. The organization has helped 200,000 participants advance their math skills through this competition since 2008. A major pro of the MathCON competition is that, in addition to public school students, private, charter, and homeschooled students are eligible to participate as well. 041b061a72
