this is a french-language film with english subtitles, so it's important that the subtitles be clear and well timed. the movie is well paced and never rushes through any scenes. even though the characters often struggle to communicate, we understand their french.

in the opening scenes, the amish community in the rural pennsylvania town of paradise has begun to adopt the english way of life, as many amish youths (including 17-year-old adam stoltzfus (crispin glover)) begin to leave their families and communities for the restless, lonely world of city life. what results is a series of tense confrontations between the two sides as the town's pastors and elders try to prevent the exodus. in the end, the film's message of tolerance and acceptance may sound like a western, but it is a story that could have easily taken place in the amish community itself. 'defiance' does a good job of humanizing its amish characters, making it clear that these people are not the ignorant, insular others of the modern world.
